Your INBDE exam day doesn't have to be stressful, it’s up to you to make it not that. Work backward from test day: confirm your ID and registration 2–3 months out, dry-run your route 1 month out, pack your grab-and-go kit the night before, and leave yourself zero decisions on exam morning.

Most exam-day stress has nothing to do with the material. It's the tiny logistics like an expired ID, a wrong turn, a forgotten snack, that derail people. This post is a foolproof execution plan so your only job on test day is showing up calm and doing what you already know how to do.

Quick note: Always follow the instructions in your official exam confirmation and your test center rules. If anything here conflicts with your confirmation email, trust the official instructions first.

How to use this post

  1. Find your current milestone (for example, 1 month before).
  2. Copy that checklist into your notes.
  3. Check every item off.
  4. Come back at the next milestone.

What should you do 2–3 months before the INBDE?

Handle the things that take the longest to fix and cause the most damage if you miss them: your ID and your registration details.

  • Check your primary ID expiration date (it must be valid on exam day)
  • Check your registration name matches your ID exactly
    • Spelling
    • Middle name or initial
    • Spaces
    • Hyphens
    • Order of names
  • If your ID will expire (or the name does not match), start fixing it now
    • Do not wait until the week of the exam!
  • Confirm your appointment details are saved in 2 places
    • Date
    • Exact start time
    • Test center address
    • Required arrival time

Pass this milestone if your ID is valid and your name matches.

If you’re still in the practice phase, here's our framework for how to actually study for the INBDE.

What should you plan 1 month before the INBDE?

Everything about exam day logistics. Plan out as much as you can, you don’t want any improvising on the day of.

  • Do a dry run of the route
    • Check travel time at the same time of day
    • Know where parking is (or where you will be dropped off)
  • Decide your break strategy
    • What you will eat
    • What you will do
    • What you will not do (for most people: no reviewing notes, no comparing with others)
  • Decide your caffeine plan
    • Keep it consistent with your normal routine
  • Choose your exam-day clothing
    • Comfortable
    • Layers (test centers can be cold)
    • Minimal jewelry
    • Comfortable shoes

What should you lock in 1 week before the INBDE?

Final confirmations. After this milestone, nothing should be left except sleep and execution.

  • Re-check your appointment confirmation and test center address
  • Set your "leave the house by" time (with buffer)
  • Plan a backup route
  • If you are using rideshare
    • Decide the app
    • Decide when you will request it
    • Keep a backup option ready

What should you pack the night before the INBDE?

Everything goes into your kit tonight. The goal: wake up tomorrow with zero decisions to make.

1) Confirm the essentials (do this first)

  • Verify your exam appointment details
    • Date
    • Exact start time
    • Test center address
    • Arrival time requirement
  • Save your confirmation / eligibility email in 2 places
    • Screenshot
    • Favorite it in your email
    • Optional: email it to yourself as backup
  • Put your primary ID into your kit right now

2) Build your grab-and-go exam kit

Use one clear pouch or small bag.

Required items

  • Primary ID
  • Backup ID (if available)
  • Exam confirmation details (email + screenshot)
  • Car keys / transit card / rideshare plan

Comfort and health (for breaks and before check-in)

  • Eye drops (especially if you wear contacts)
  • Glasses (backup for contacts)
  • Contact lens case + solution (if applicable)
  • Lip balm
  • Tissues
  • Any prescribed medications you might need during breaks
    • Bring in the original bottle if possible

Food and hydration (for breaks)

  • Water
  • Quick snack (banana, granola bar, dates, trail mix)
  • More filling option if needed (sandwich, yogurt, protein snack)

Test center temperatures vary. Dress in layers so you can focus on questions, not on freezing!

3) Write your morning timeline

  • Wake-up time
  • Breakfast time
  • Leave-home time
  • Arrival time (with buffer)

Buffer for:

  • Parking
  • Security check-in
  • Finding the correct suite/floor
  • Traffic or transit delays

4) Protect your sleep

This is your performance multiplier. Don't blow it by cramming until midnight.

  • Stop heavy studying early in the evening
  • Set a wind-down alarm
  • Lay out your clothes
  • Set two alarms
  • Charge your phone

What should you do on INBDE exam morning?

Keep it boring. Follow your timeline, eat a familiar breakfast, hydrate, arrive early. No surprises, no improvising.

When you sit down:

  • Take one slow breath
  • Tell yourself: "I am here to execute what I already know."

The final checklist (copy this)

  • Primary ID is in my exam kit
  • Backup ID is in my kit (if available)
  • Confirmation email is saved + screenshot
  • Test center address is confirmed
  • Route is planned + backup route
  • Leave-home time is written down
  • Clothes are set out
  • Snacks are packed
  • Water plan is ready
  • Eye drops / contacts / glasses are packed (if applicable)
  • Medications are packed (if applicable)
  • Phone is charging
  • Two alarms are set

You don't need to feel 100% calm to do well. If you followed the milestones and checked everything off, you've already done the most important work for exam-day success.

Frequently asked questions

What ID do you need for the INBDE?

A valid, government-issued ID with your photo and signature. The name on your ID must match your JCNDE registration exactly - spelling, middle names, hyphens, spaces, all of it. Bring a backup ID if you have one.

Can you bring food into the INBDE?

Not into the testing room, but you can store food in a locker and access it during scheduled breaks. Pack snacks and water the night before so you're not scrambling on exam morning.

How early should you arrive for the INBDE?

At least 30 minutes before your scheduled start time. You'll need time for parking, check-in, security, and finding the right room. Build buffer into your morning timeline, rushing to the test center is the easiest way to start the exam rattled.
